This fun craft is not only adorable when done, but it’s tasty too! Sit the kids down to make this fun spring project. Be sure to make extras for friends and family.
Ingredients:
Chow mein noodles
chocolate chips or brick chocolate
Jelly beans
candy coated chocolate eggs
marshmallow chicks
peanut butter
wax paper
paper plates (colored plates optional)
Directions:
Place squares of wax paper onto to individual plates. Put chow mien noodles in a large bowl. If using brick chocolate, break into pieces. Melt chocolate chips or pieces in the microwave, or over low heat on stove, just until melted. Pour melted chocolate over chow mien noodles, mix together to coat.
Place mounds of chocolate/chow mien mixture onto several plates (on top of waxed paper). Have children form the mixtures into nests. Be sure the chocolate has cooled, but don’t wait too long or it will harden!
Using peanut butter as an adhesive, “glue” down the jelly beans and candy coated chocolate eggs inside the nest cavity. “Glue” marshmallow chick on the edge of or inside of the nest.
These make fun gifts from kids to their friends, teacher and family members. You can also make these nests at birthday parties as a fun and edible take-home party favor.

1/3 C. shortening
1/3 C. butter
2 1/2 C. flour
3/4 C. sugar
1 egg
1 T. milk
1 t. baking powder
dash of salt
1 t. vanilla
Add shortening and butter to a mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until softened and well blended. Add half of the flour, sugar, egg, milk, baking powder and salt to the flour. Beat until thoroughly combined. Stir in remaining flour.
Divide dough in half. Cover and refrigerate for 3 hours.
Meanwhile, invert a 1 or 1 1/2 qt. ovenproof bowl on a cookie sheet. Cover the bowl with foil. Grease the foil and set aside.
For a pattern, cut out a 9 inch circle of parchment paper.
To make bowls:
Roll out one of the dough packages, between 2 sheets of wax paper to a 10-11 inch circle. Lay your 9 inch pattern on top. Cut with a knife or fluted pastry cutter around the pattern. If desired, cut out of the scrap dough decorative shapes and place them on another cookie sheet.
Remove one sheet of the wax paper and carefully invert dough over bowl. Remove other sheet and form dough around bowl.
Bake the cookie bowl in a 350° F. oven, about 15 minutes or until edges turn a light brown. Transfer the cookie bowl to a wire rack to cool. Then carefully remove the cookie bowl from bowl it was baked on.
Bake the decorative shapes, if you did them, for about 6 minutes or till the edges are a light brown. Cool. Attach with a little frosting.
Makes 2 9 inch bowls.

BANJARMASIN - Nihilnya kontribusi pengelolaan sarang burung walet terhadap pendapatan asli daerah (PAD), menjadi perhatian serius kalangan DPRD Kota Banjarmasin.
Wakil Ketua DPRD Kota Banjarmasin Drs Abadi Noor Supit MM berpandangan, untuk memaksimalkan pendapatan dari sektor usaha burung walet yang terus menjamur tersebut, idealnya pungutan yang harus dikenakan adalah retribusi dan pajak. “Belajar dari Kota Pangkalpinang, kemungkinan besar di Banjarmasin juga diterapkan pajak dan retribusi,” ujarnya saat dihubungi koran ini, kemarin.
Dikatakan, usulan tersebut akan disampaikan saat penggodokkan Raperda Pengelolaan Sarang Burung walet yang segera dijadwalkan. Selain itu, politisi kawakan Partai Golkar ini juga akan mengusulkan retribusi Izin Mendirikan Bangunan (IMB) yang secara khusus mengatur bangunan walet dan Izin Gangguan Lingkungan (HO). “Saya mengharapkan, produk hukum yang dibuat nanti dapat memaksimalkan pendapatan dari usaha walet yang belum tergali,” tambahnya.
Sebelumnya, Kepala Dinas Pertanian dan Peternakan Kota Banjarmasin drh Rusmin A menyarankan, untuk mengoptimalkan pendapatan dari usaha walet, asosiasi harus lebih diberdayakan. Hanya saja, agar asosiasi dapat bekerja maksimal harus dilegalisasi dengan Surat Keputusan Walikota. “Para pengusaha burung walet di Kota Banjarmasin sudah punya asosiasi, namun belum dilegalisasi. Nah, apabila raperda sudah disahkan menjadi perda, saya mengharapkan asosiasi sudah dilegalisasi dengan SK Walikota,” sarannya.
Menurut Rusmin, asosiasi merupakan mitra kerja pemkot yang nantinya membantu menghitung produksi sarang walet serta melakukan pembinaan terhadap pengelola yang salah dalam membuat penangkaran walet. “Kalau ada pengusaha yang salah dalam pengelolaan tugas asosiasi yang menegur dan membinanya. Begitu pula, bila eksekutif atau legislatif akan menggelar pertemuan untuk membahas soal walet, tidak perlu repot-repot cukup menghubungi asosiasi,” pungkasnya.(sga)
